Challenge 01 - Extract selected data from Excel using with Tableau Prep

What you will learn

• Retrieve certain cells of an Excel file.

• Automate this process by creating a workflow (using Tableau Prep for example)

• Save the new data so it can be used in a next step.

Why this is relevant

• In business you might get an excel file on a regular (weekly/monthly..) with latest data (Financials, Marketing, HR data etc). You might need to bring this together with other data or do your own analysis.

• Instead of manually copy/pasting the data or creating macros in Excel, this process can be automated in a Data Preparation tool.

• Keep the original excel file without making any changes.

• Save lots of time in the long run ; )

Instructions

Download the Excel file from data.public.lu, clean it up (PREPARE) and extract the data we need, and build a dashboard.

Hint: First use a data preparation tool such as Tableau Prep to prepare the data. The xls has already aggregated data we don’t need, just get the details as highlighted. Then in a second step use dashboarding tool such as Tableau Desktop or PowerBI to build the dashboard - we will cover this in a separate post.
